Robert Samuel Hopkins was born on 6th December 1866 in Newington, the son of George William Hopkins, a porter at St. Thomas’s Hospital.
Robert married relatively young to Ellen Hale in 1888 and the couple were to have 6 children, 2 of whom died young. He worked alongside his father, and Walter Crowne (Worshipful Master in 1912) as a Porter at St. Thomas’s Hospital.
Worshipful Master in 1911, he was awarded London Rank for his services to freemasonry.
Having worked and lived in Lambeth all his life, on retirement he moved to Southfields where he died on 3rd January 1950.
